Arturo Chavez was born in 1949 in Embudo, New Mexico, nestled along the Rio Grande south of Taos. Raised amid the spectacular vistas of northern New Mexico in Chimayo, Chavez is dedicated to preserving the landscape by painting it. Chavez is a 13th generation New Mexican. His oil painting process often involves plein air studies, as well as photographs and drawings.

Chavez painted throughout his youth, but did not turn to art as a full-time career until the 1980s. Since then, he has received international recognition for his landscapes with exhibitions in the US Embassies in Russia, Croatia and Guyana.

Chavez’ work has been exhibited in numerous galleries and museums including the Tucson Desert Art Museum, Phoenix Art Museum, and the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City. His work is housed in the permanent collections of New Mexico State University, Bernalillo County Courthouse, The Santa Fe Capitol Collection, the Taos National Guard, the National Hispanic Cultural Center, and the Eiteljorg Museum of Western Art in Indianapolis, IN. His work is also featured in the corporate collections of Ebner International in Linz, Austria, Fuji Electric in Japan and the Burlington Northern Railway.
